Larger-than-life Clippy sculpture created for Microsoft’s 50-year anniversary
Challenge

Reinventing the paper clip seems simple at first glance, but when you scale it up more than 50 times its normal size, things get interesting. Permanent, fixed sculptures are one thing, but Microsoft Clippy’s busy tour schedule added real complexity. Various requirements including strength, durability, cost, and ease of setup and transportation can all be in direct conflict with one another.

Solution

Steel tube — too heavy.
Aluminum — expensive.
Pool noodles — a fun idea, but lacking in aesthetic quality and durability.

The Figure Plant team developed a lightweight solution by combining a custom steel internal skeleton with a high-density foam body, finished in a metallic paper clip coating. Removable facial features and a detachable high-gloss base make for safe handling, efficient transport, and simple setup for this traveling experiential sculpture.

Results

Microsoft devotees flocked to the opportunity to get a photo with this larger-than-life replica of the infamous animated assistant, creating a highly shareable, tour-ready brand moment.
