Challenge

Notable for many years, the adidas Terrex brand sought to generate more focus and fresh buzz for its internal brand teams and consumers through a unique and localized, physical expresion of the brand. With the operational support of it's Portland, Oregon-based North American headquarters, it made sense to create this premium brand exercise in their backyard.

Solution

Figure Plant was tasked with creating a cost-effective, temporary, premium retail space within minutes of brand headquarters and in a prime shopping location with foot traffic in Portland. Originally planned for a 3-6 week pop-up, the fixtures were made with durable materials but finishes were held back for cost saving. Raw steel, high-grade birch plywood, cork, rubber, and natural stone adorn the temporary rental space with ‘portal’ transitions between zones. A wall was opened up to an adjacent room as an event space for outdoor related talks, lectures, and PR events. References to local outdoor areas are found on laser engraved signage.  A 3D mountainscape and dimensional trail map of Forest Park end cap the space, but the crown jewel is the rain display in the center that demonstrates water-proof outerwear performance.

Results

What started as a 3 week retail pop-up was extended to 6 weeks, which became 3 months which became 12 months! Figure Plant worked closely with the design team at Starch Creative in providing quality retail fabrication and smart material choices that allowed this retail space to long outlive its original intended lifespan, delivering an authentic shopping experience for consumers and an effective retail laboratory for the brand teams. In the end, producing 316 Twitter engagements, 335,000 potential Instagram impressions and 9,523 Instagram engagements. "It went beyond a selling space but was also a great PR opportunity, expanding our community and raising important eyebrows within our walls" -Sara Manzo, Business Dev. Mgr., adidas Outdoor.
